Enable GroupPolicy GPEDIT for Windows Vista Home

by Hiroshi on 13-04-2009

I posted a trick for boosting internet speed using GPEdit for XP. Somebody asked me, what about Vista? I found that gpedit.msc (group policy editor) is not present for Vista home and premium edition. It does exist in Vista Pro (Ultimate, Business and Enterprise editions). I proudly told him that Microsoft did not find it funny to bother Vista Home users to mess with Group Policy Editor, so they just eliminated the tool. But I gave him some tips related to how on this mortal world of windows we can desperately try to increase internet speed for Windows Vista by 'other' means. He was not convinced. Anyways now the good news is. We can populate, generate or create gpedit.msc thing in Windows Vista Home edition by using some Wizardry.

Speed Up Internet Speed for Windows Vista

by Hiroshi on 04-04-2009

In my previous post I referred to Boost Your Internet Speed By GPEdit for Windows XP. I was asked about the same for Windows Vista. Well now gpedit.msc (group policy editor) is not present for Vista home and premium edition. It does exist in Vista Pro (Ultimate, Business and Enterprise editions). You have to manually edit the registry in order to change group policy settings. Microsoft has an Excel spreadsheet that lists all the group policy settings there. But that is very hard to go through all the entries. We can search through the list of course. But we will discuss some easier ways to boost internet speed for Windows Vista.

  • By enabling Windows smooth edges of screen fonts
  • By enabling Window's ClearType.

By default, Microsoft Windows has smooth fonts enabled. If you switch to classical theme and customize the PC for better performance then settings for fonts may also change.
