CloudFlare with its services like CDN, website optimizer, website security, analytics and apps – claims website security and its uptime. They say that they supercharge website and due to cloud services your website will never go down. For free plan their promise is the same. Dreamhost offered cloudflare within their control panel few days back. You can create free account at cloudflare, add your websites, do few conformational tasks to enable cloudflare services for your website but if you are a Dreamhost user, you can enable cloudflare for your websites from dreamhost.
I did the same and enabled cloudflare for my websites with free plan and felt thankful towards Dreamhost to include and indicate this amazing facility for free. But my spirits dampened when I spotted my website behaving oddly.
Majority of web hosting companies do little when your website gets compromised. They will only tell you to leave when your hosting space gets bugged. You alone are responsible for your data. Use of open source software brings vulnerabilities in scripts which can be used by hackers who can bypass security measures implemented by you and your web host and access your website information. Hackers can inject scripts in your website directory and by using those scripts they can access your files, edit/delete them if they want. I used a good web host in near past, and they told me to leave, take my data and find any other web host. Only few web hosts will actually protect you by assisting you in eliminating the dangerous scripts if your website has any. Dreamhost is web hosting company I have been using for my websites and it feels like home with them. They alert the customers if a vulnerability is found in their web space.
For a popular wordpress powered blog you need PHP virtual private server or dedicated private server. Dreamhost dedicated server and virtual private server are great choices for growing blogs. We also use Dreamhost virtual private server hosting and we have published this website host review earlier. Dreamhost hosting is reliable. Dreamhost VPS has been powerful virtual private server for our wordpress blogs. Private web server allows you to expand resources as your blog demands. Private server hosting is not cheap so it should be managed by you at regular basis according to your website/blog needs otherwise you will have to pay extra bucks every month that your website never used. Dreamhost shared server is also powerful enough to bear a blog’s load. When you need performance and there comes a phase when your blog attracts hundreds of users at the same time, then you need to shift towards VPS hosting or PS hosting where you can scale resources as you need. Dreamhost offered a slider to increase or decrease resources of PS as you need them which also affected at monthly costs. In Dreamhost Panel there was no indication or alert of exact resources blog uses at that specific time except for a graph. Then Dreamhost changed their system and things became a bit dodgy. We had to always keep slider a little more than the graph measurements. On asking they said that some portion of resources (swap) is needed by the system that is why you need to keep it a little bit higher than the graph details. Now they have modified the system and its good to find improvement in how we can manage our PS resources.
Recently Dreamhost made some changes in their PS resources. The customers who have Virtual Private Server resources can adjust the slider from their PS resources section to cop with heavy site usage issues. Previously they had the same stuff but with an indication of burstable resources. I mean if you slide your resources to any point, It would indicate that you have ‘this much’ extra burstable resources in case your site needs it. Now this feature is gone permanently. On asking their support they told that burstable resources are still there, its just they eliminated that indication so that users may not get confused. Previously my PS resources were showing me huge consumption and I had adjusted the slider a little higher. I noticed that the graph in PS resources section dropped at considerable amount. On asking the support they told me that they have adjusted their servers to handle memory usage in an even better way.
I had to ask DreamHost support about a problem today and after when I generated a ticket, I spotted a magic button ‘Live Chat’ above at the panel. I was literally overjoyed. This is the feature which I used to miss a lot in Control Panel. There are many Hosts out there which provide Live Chat facility even when you are not their customer (This does not mean that they are good though). I withdrew the ticket and just talked with DreamHost support live and I am really happy. I have observed that most of the users, when they get hosting account, they also check that whether there is a Live chat facility or not so that they can get back to support as soon as some problem occurs. It makes users feel secure, that Support is always there.
This question arises in your mind when you face a conflict in case when you are at shared server environment but sometimes you feel that traffic is getting higher and website sometimes goes less responsive. You think that it is not a perfect time just yet, to move. Let the traffic be more and then you will move to ‘Private Server’. Some people even wait for Webhost to warn them about their heavy usage and need to upgrade. Read on to know some interesting facts which will help you to decide.
Nothing is perfect or vital forever in this world. Sometimes somethings are good for some people but are bad at the same time for others. Dreamhost is a great host but here are some facts that might bother some people. I think its no big deal. They can consider about these points.
