Even Google Feels Sorry Sometimes

We’re sorry…
… but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can’t process your request right now.

We’ll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, if you suspect that your computer or network has been infected, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your systems are free of viruses and other spurious software.

If you’re continually receiving this error, you may be able to resolve the problem by deleting your Google cookie and revisiting Google. For browser-specific instructions, please consult your browser’s online support center.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we’ll see you again on Google.
To continue searching, please type the characters you see below.

And there they authenticated from human whether I was a human or any alien and then next session and I got my search results. What exactly was my search query? It was php screen resolution checking script.

I wonder whether search requests should be authenticated or not? Might any senior developer has answer? What do you think?

AdSense Ad Units Format Changed - Less Clickable Ads

adsense

To avoid accidental clicks Google has made some changes in format of AdSense Ad Units now.

Previously, visitors could click on the background and full text of an ad, but now they can click only on the title and URL of a text ad. No longer valid are clicks on the background and clicks on the text that is not the title or URL in the ad.

In an advertiser point of view, this is good! but many publishers think it will decrease a lot of adsense earnings by decrease in click-through rate. But I think this preventive measure will put quality in advertisement for advertisers.

The reasoning given by AdSense for change in their text ad formats is to help reduce accidental clicks, increase value for advertisers and improve advertiser campaign value. A reduction in accidental clicks will keep users on your pages, interacting with your content until they choose to click on an ad. This change will enhance the user’s overall experience with your websites.

I think it makes sense and is a good step. No good webmaster even wants user to accidently click ad and go away. Instead a good webmaster or blogger wants to give more valued content and information. The only purpose of ads is not to earn but also give users other valuable resource to explore, in the case they want it. It is all on user’s choice.

However this important format change in AdSense text ad must be in mind of publisher, advertiser and user as well.

Google Fun Facts

Google sorts billions of bits of information for its users. Here are some little-known bits of information about Google:

  • Google’s name is a play on the word googol, which refers to the number 1 followed by one hundred zeroes. The term was coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner, and was popularized in the book, “Mathematics and the Imagination” by Kasner and James Newman. Google’s play on the term reflects the company’s mission to organize the immense amount of information available on the web.
  • Google started as a research project at Stanford University, created by Ph.D. candidates Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were 24 years old and 23 years old respectively (a combined 47 years old).
  • Google’s index of web pages is the largest in the world, comprising of billions of web pages. Google searches this immense collection of web pages often in less than half a second.
  • Google receives daily search requests from all over the world, including Antarctica.
  • Users can restrict their searches for content in 35 non-English languages, including Chinese, Greek, Icelandic, Hebrew, Hungarian and Estonian. To date, no requests have been received from beyond the earth’s orbit, but Google has a Klingon interface just in case.
  • Google has a world-class staff of more than 2,668 employees known as Googlers. The company headquarters is called the Googleplex.
  • Googlers are multifaceted. One operations manager, who keeps the Google network in good health is a former neurosurgeon. One software engineer is a former rocket scientist. And the company’s chef formerly prepared meals for members of The Grateful Dead and funkmeister George Clinton.

Google Lab - What’s Next

Google’s technology playground.
Google labs showcases a few of google favorite ideas that aren’t quite ready for prime time. Play with prototypes and send your comments directly to the Googlers who developed them.

Some of these experiments are Experimental Search, Google Code Search, Google Music Trends, Google Accessible Search, Google Trends, Google Mars, Google Web Accelerator and iGoogle (Personalized Start Pages - Web The Way You Want It ) is also one of them.

View Full List at Google Lab.

I liked it what they do and inform the world that what is coming next so you may be prepared or get ideas. But before you use these google experiments also consider the note beneath the google lab main page which states that:

Please note: These technologies are still in the beginning stages of development, so they may disappear without warning or perform erratically. If something’s not working on this page, please come back and try it again later.

Icon Search Engines

Recently i came accross two brilliant icon search engines which provide high quality icons in png format.

ICONLET
is Icon Search Engines
Iconlet is simple search engine for free icons, images. Ok, it’s simple but has few nice features. For every image user get information about author, image resolution, graphics format and license type. Just type name in search window and you will get a list o available icons, images which you can use in your project.
If you are a icons creator and want to add your content to Iconlet just send them an email with icons download link and license type information.

ICONFINDER
largelogo Icon Search Engines
The best search engine for icons.
All the icons are in PNG-format. The benefit of PNG-images is the alpha-channel, meaning that pixels can be transparent. Do not copy-paste icons into eg. Photoshop, since icons will loose their alpha-channel information. Instead, use the download-link to save icons locally.
If you wish to submit icons, then forward an email martin.leblanc1[at]gmail.com with icons attached in a compressed format. Include information about the icon designer and the license.
The icons should be in PNG-format and with transparent background and in one or more of the following sizes (in pixels): 12 x 12, 16 x 16, 22 x 22, 32 x 32, 48 x 48, 64 x 64 or 128 x 128. Remember to name the icons with useful names as “computer.png”.
