Windows Genuine Advantage is anti-piracy program started by Microsoft in 2005 which enforces the online validation of some of the Microsoft products. It is automatically installed if Windows Automatic Updates are enabled. This program notifies you if a copy of Windows is not genuine. If you installed Windows updates from Microsoft’s website and your Windows copy is not genuine, you will be reminded via a message which permanently resides near your computer’s taskbar to purchase original copy of windows.

What data does WGA collect?

This tool, if installed, collects the following data from the system.

  • BIOS checksum.
  • MAC address.
  • GUID
  • Hard drive serial number.
  • Computer make and model
  • Windows XP product ID.
  • PC BIOS information (make, version, date).
  • PC manufacturer.
  • User locale setting.
  • Region and language settings of the operating system.
  • Operating system version.
  • Validation and installation results.
  • Windows or Office product key.
