How to Change Your Display Name on Facebook

by on June 24th, 2013

I have not felt need to change name for my Facebook account yet, but a guest asked that how can he change his first and last name on Facebook. You can change your display name for Facebook account from Facebook settings. You can also add an alternative name or nick name for Facebook account. In the upper right corner of the Facebook page, click on gear icon and select ‘Account Settings’. In ‘General’ tab, under general account settings first editable option is name. You can edit that to change your name for Facebook account – BUT NOT SO FAST! Few Facebook users try to change their name and get the following error. “We require everyone to use their real name on Facebook.” Facebook won’t allow you to change your name easily, because Facebook has certain policies and rules for name changes.

Before you change your name for Facebook account, you should keep few things in mind. Facebook limits number of times you can change your name and tries to make sure that everyone uses their real name.

Be your real name they mean the name that is listed on your credit card, passport, student ID, etc. Nicknames can be used as a first or middle name if they’re a variation of your real first or last name (like Bob instead of Robert). You can also list another name on your account (ex: maiden name, nickname, or professional name), by adding an alternate name to your timeline. Only one person’s name should be listed on the account – timelines are for individual use only. Pretending to be anything or anyone is not allowed.

Facebook is a community where people use their real identities. We require everyone to provide their real names, so you always know who you’re connecting with. This helps keep our community safe.

Facebook Names can’t Include

  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation
  • Characters from multiple languages
  • Titles of any kind (ex: professional, religious, etc)
  • Words, phrases, or nicknames in place of a middle name
  • Offensive or suggestive content of any kind

What if you are not able to change name on Facebook

In few cases you may not be able to change your name, if you’ve reached the maximum number of name changes allowed for Facebook or you’ve previously had a Facebook representative change your name. You can still request for name change though.

If your name change request was also not approved. It might be because the name you requested doesn’t follow Facebook name standards that are described above. If you think that you are following Facebook name policies but still you cannot change your new Facebook name or your name change request is being rejected, then you can contact Facebook support.

You will have to upload a copy of your government-issued ID (ID card, passport, driver’s license or similar document) so they can confirm your real name and that this is your own account.

In coming updates Facebook might require identity documents for all new sign-ups. They want to keep the users identities real so that users can recognize each other. Of course this restriction will also give Facebook another edge over other social communities out there. It will also develop a sense of trust, security and safety in Facebook users that many other social networking websites fail to build in their users. Even paid social networking websites are crowded by people with fake identities. So this is a mandatory move by Facebook to keep it genuine social networking website. If you have not changed your name again and again for Facebook, you might still have a chance to correct it to your real name if its not real name already. Do not use nick name or name that is not your real name and do not change it often to avoid account stability problems.
