    @[email protected]: The best plugin for cache is WP Super Cache. Cache will make your website fast and decrease its load time. You will pay less for hosting charges and earn more from same website if you will use cache.

    @Rody: You can use Akismet plugin which comes with WordPress software with discussion blacklist under settings. There are many other ways to eliminate spam problem from your blog.
    @mike: I recommend only few and necessary plugins some of which are:
    Akismet
    All in one SEO pack
    Google XML sitemaps
    wassup
    Simple archives generator
    Subscribe to comments
    WP db backup
    WP super cache
    @Ross: I usually take backup after every few posts.
    @Nina: Choose web host carefully. Only unix based secure dedicated server environment is good for blogs, in my opinion.
