How to Access Offline English Wikipedia

by on January 18th, 2012

The Wikipedia went offline today. But the articles are still accessible with a little trick. Wikipedia and many other popular websites protested against PIPA and SOPA because those bills can harm the free and open internet and information online. As described earlier, SOPA and PIPA aim to put burden on website owners to police user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of entire sites and blacklisting from major search engines. The concern is great and the protest is valid. While Wikipedia protests and disables articles for users today, there is still a way you can access English Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia. Many students depend on Wikipedia’s articles to complete their assignments. Users find information about virtually anything at Wikipedia. Today while the Wikipedia is offline, users who need Wikipedia can access it by using following method.

Use Esc Key

  • Proceed to the Wikipedia.
  • Click at the English Link.
  • Wikipedia English version will appear but the page will redirect to the blackened page.
  • You have to hit the Esc key on the keyboard before the page redirects.

You will have a second or two to hit the Esc key, otherwise the page will redirect to the offline Wikipedia. Once you successfully stop a page from redirecting, you can use the search box to find your article. But at every page load, you will need to hit the Esc key. If the page redirects, the URL will not be changed in address bar. You can still select the address in the address bar, reload the page by hitting enter and hit Esc key to stop it from redirecting.

Disable Wikipedia Stylesheet

For Mozilla Firefox users, disable stylesheet for Wikipedia by doing this:
Open Firefox and go to Wikipedia main page. From Firefox do the following:

View -> Page Style -> No Style
