The Wikipedia went offline today. But the articles are still accessible with a little trick. Wikipedia and many other popular websites protested against PIPA and SOPA because those bills can harm the free and open internet and information online. As described earlier, SOPA and PIPA aim to put burden on website owners to police user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of entire sites and blacklisting from major search engines. The concern is great and the protest is valid. While Wikipedia protests and disables articles for users today, there is still a way you can access English Wikipedia.

The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate. If passed, these bills would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia. Only English version of Wikipedia will be offline on Wednesday for 24 hours.
